Kathmandu: Bagmati Province Chief Minister Bahadur Singh Lama tendered his resignation on Sunday, stepping down amid growing internal party pressure following his defeat by Indra Bahadur Baniya in the Nepali Congress parliamentary party leadership election.
Lama submitted his resignation to Province Chief Deepak Devkota on Sunday evening. Speaking to the media afterward, Lama described his removal as the result of a "political conspiracy" and defended his nearly one-year tenure, highlighting key reforms and achievements under his leadership.
According to Lama, his government made notable progress in disaster management, physical infrastructure development, capital expenditure, and revenue generation. He stated that a rapid disaster response team had been formed, 21 stalled development projects were completed, and service delivery had begun transitioning to digital platforms. He also pointed to the implementation of a provincial anti-corruption action plan aimed at ensuring good governance.
With Lama’s resignation, Indra Bahadur Baniya is set to become the next Chief Minister of Bagmati Province. As per a prior power-sharing agreement between the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML, Baniya will head the provincial government for the next eight months.
